DISCIPLE BIBLE STUDY

First United Methodist offers a variety of in-depth Bible studies that meet other times than Sunday school.  Participating in these studies develops biblical knowledge, a closer walk with God, small group accountability and strong Christian leaders. Some studies are short term, running 6-10 weeks, while others, such as those from the DISCIPLE  series are 30-36 weeks. Most studies are offered on Wednesday nights at 6:00 p.m. following the Wednesday Night Live (WNL) meal. WNL coincides with the school year.

New studies begin periodically through out the year. Some are taught by the pastors and some are facilitated by members or noted community experts. Watch for new classes in the newsletter or contact the church office for more information.

DISCIPLE assumes that the bible is the key to renewal in the church. It recognizes the human-divine nature of the Bible: The actual texts of Scripture were written by human beings like ourselves in their cultural settings, under the divine inspiration of God. Studies in the DISCIPLE series include (30-36 weeks):

Disciple I: Becoming a Disciple through Bible Study
This study is the basic course in which participants read over 80% of the Bible. This course should be completed before taking any of the others.

Disciple II: Into the Word
Into the World is a study on the books of Genesis, Exodus, Luke and Acts.

Disciple III: Remember Who You Are
This is a study on the books of the prophets and Paul’s Letters.

Disciple IV: Under the Tree of Life
This study covers the Old Testament writings and the Gospel & letters of John, and James, Jude and the book of Revelation.

Jesus and the Gospels
This course invites believers to look at Jesus in each of the four Gospels and ask the question, “Who is the Jesus that you see?”

Christian Believer
This thirty-week study of the classical doctrines of the Christian faith aims at presenting, explaining, and interpreting Christian doctrine as the basic teaching of the church to the end that informed believing leads to committed discipleship.

Short-term DISCIPLE Studies (8-11 weeks):
Invitation to Psalms, Invitation to John, Invitation to the Old Testatment, Invitation to the New Testament, Invitation to Romans, and Invitation to Genesis.

THE WALK TO EMMAUS

The Walk to Emmaus is a program of spiritual renewal sponsored by the General Board of Discipleship of the United Methodist Church.  This 72-hour experience in study, prayer, fellowship and worship has blessed the lives of men and women (men and women attend on separate weekends) of all ages, races, denominations and backgrounds.

There is also a high-school version of Emmaus called Chrysalis that has brought blessings and life changing experiences to many youth.

After having the “Emmaus experience,” those who have participated in the “Walk”, gather together on a monthly basis for a time of praise and worship. Smaller groups known as “Reunions” meet weekly.

First United Methodist has many men, women, and youth who have been on an Emmaus weekend or Chrysalis flight.  They return excited and eager to be involved in the church, this fulfilling the purpose of Emmaus, “for the training of Christian leaders in the church.”  For more additional information on the Walk to Emmaus click on the following links: http://www.upperroom.org/emmaus/ or http://www.goldentriangleemmaus.org
